Parents need to be consistent.
This consistency must occur as a parenting unit and as individual parents.
I am reminded of the phrase "United we stand. Divided we fall." Without a unified parenting methodology, parents will be fighting against each other rather than working with each other. Mom says one thing. Dad says something different. When parents are not consistent with their agreed upon principles, the kiddos know who to exploit to get what they want.
But even when parents are in agreement, they have to be disciplined enough to apply the agreed upon principles. Consistency is not just about theory, but also about application. Even when tired, stressed, worried, etc. each parent must apply the agreed upon principles on a consistent basis.
I want to hear from you.
- Do you think that consistency is an important part of parenting?
- Are you in agreement with your spouse about parenting methodology?
- What obstacles prevent you from being consistent as you apply those principles?
