"Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon) is an island country in the Indian Ocean south of India. Its varied landscape ranges from rainforest and arid plains to mountains and sandy beaches. The country owes its fame to its Buddhist ruins including Sigiraya, a citadel of the fifth century with a palace and frescoes. The city of Anuradhapura, once the capital of Sri Lanka, has many ruins dating back more than 2,000 years.
From Colombo, the modern capital, there are seaside resorts such as Bentota, to the southwest, and Galle, which includes a fort and an old colonial town. Inland, the Golden Temple of Dambulla is a cave complex adorned with statues and Buddhist paintings. In the Central Massif, a protected area made up of tea plantations and a tropical forest offering great biodiversity, the bustling town of Kandy houses the Temple of the Tooth and hosts the Esala Perahera festival, in honor of the tooth that is kept there. Pilgrims climb the 2,243-meter peak of Adam's Peak to reach a sacred rock formation resembling an imprint that is located towards the summit. To the southeast, Yala National Park is home to herds of elephants and leopards."
