NIL is a gamechanger in College Athletics and it starts tomorrow in several states.
For the uninitiated, NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) legislation for student-athletes will take effect in several states on July 1. This will enable student-athletes in particular states to earn money off their likeness from other individuals or from sponsorship opportunities. It is a massive reform that provides businesses large and small the opportunity to use the celebrity of a student-athlete or the existing social profile of a student-athlete to their advantage.
So what does this mean for DunkSocial?
Possibly big things. Consider that a professional athlete would command a considerable amount of money to do any sort of endorsement given their professional status. However, student-athletes are a bit more obscure. After all, less people in the US and internationally are familiar with Mississippi State Combo Guard Iverson Molinar than James Harden, Kyrie Irving, Markelle Fultz, etc. However, someone like an Iverson Molinar who is one of the top College Basketball players in the SEC can command the attention of those not just in Mississippi, but in the SEC footprint and that matters. There's a value to a student-athlete's influence and likeness, it is considerably less than an NBA player, but it still matters.
This is where there is an opportunity for DunkSocial to make a splash. Choose a student-athlete (basketball player) who would be a cool ambassador for the community, compensate them in DUNK, and watch the community grow.
It's an opportunity to make in-roads with regional audiences and with students. Here are a few student-athletes to consider given that Florida, Georgia, Texas, Mississippi, New Mexico, and Alabama's legislation will take effect on July 1.
- Iverson Molinar: Mississippi State
- KD Johnson: Auburn
- Jabri Abdur-Rahim: Georgia
- Andrew Jones: Texas
- Wyatt Wilkes: Florida State
- Kendric Davis: SMU
- Mike Devoe: Georgia Tech
