Maundy Thursday is the holy day falling on Thursday before Easter. According to Christianity, this day comemmorates the Last Supper of Jesus with the twelve Apostles. Traditionally, every year this day Christians paint red eggs. The red color symbolizes the blood of Jesus and the tears of his mother, Holy Mary, while the eggs symbolize the grave of Jesus.
As a supporter of religion and tratidition, I really enjoy to follow the values and mores of my country, Greece. Today I painted my eggs with red onion leaves, avoiding harmful chemical paints.
First I boiled the onion leaves wrapped in tulle in a big saucepan.
After half an hour I removed the tulle packages of onion leaves.
I gathered fifteen clean eggs in a big bowl. As you can see their color is white, beige and brown.
I added one cup of white vinegar in the red onion leaves fluid and then I started slightly sinking my eggs in it.
I boiled my eggs for half an hour.
I let the eggs lying in the red onion leaves fluid all night long.
When I woke up I removed them from the saucepan and wiped them softly with a clean cloth.
Then I polished them with oil to look shiny and glossy.
Voilà!!!! My eggs are ready lying in their basket.
Happy Easter to all of you!
And always remember that in the end it's not just about the Easter egg or bunnies. It's the hope that this season enfolds in everyone's homes!
