"Menstrual cramps happen because you’re still a virgin."
"Once you have a boyfriend and start 'doing the do', your cramps will disappear."
I remember hearing those exact words as a teenager.
It wasn’t just once; it was repeated, almost like a chorus, by peers, older women, and even whispered behind backs like it was sacred wisdom.
Looking back, I realize how much damage such myths can do.
They sow confusion, shame, and silence around something that should be celebrated—menstruation.
Dear young girl,
Let me say this loud and clear:
You are not unclean because you menstruate.
Your period is not a problem to fix. It is a sign of power; your body’s natural cycle preparing itself to nurture life. That’s a miracle, not a mistake.
Take pride when you spot.
Rejoice when you flow.
You, my dear, are the very definition of “out of your belly shall flow rivers of living water.”
You give life because you menstruate, don’t let anyone convince you otherwise.
And as for the myth that sex relieves menstrual cramps?
False. Cramps are caused by uterine contractions and hormonal changes, not your sexual activity (or lack of it). Believing such myths often opens the door to more serious issues: unwanted pregnancies, abortions, hormonal disruptions, and emotional trauma.
Let’s be real:
Sexual activity is not a remedy for menstrual discomfort.
Proper menstrual care, hygiene, a good diet, hydration, and medical guidance when needed; those are what help.
Today is World Menstrual Hygiene Day. And it’s a perfect time to say this:
🔴 MENSTRUATION IS NOT A TABOO. 🔴
Let’s talk about it.
Let’s teach our daughters and sisters the truth.
Let’s unlearn the lies we were told.
Let’s empower a generation to see periods for what they are—a symbol of strength and life.
What myths did you hear growing up?
I’d love to hear from you. Share your story in the comments or message me. Let's break the cycle, together.
Blessedink.
