The eclipse is over and I'm back from the eye doctor.. It was about 80% covered in North Dakota and got a little dark out for about an hour, so it's safe to look right? Definitely not. A cool experience to watch the sun disappear turned quickly into a life changing experience. We've been bombarded with news of the eclipse for what seemed to be the entire summer and I got tired of hearing about cereal box eclipse viewers and how you shouldn't look directly at the sun, after all isn't it so overrated?
Well, guess what? I looked at the sun during the 80% blockage by the moon with my bare eyes and went blind in my left eye. It also didn't hurt the eye like the sun normally would, I learned from my recent trip that when it turns darker your pupils expand to take in more light, however when your retina focuses on the light from the sun, it scorches your retina rendering it useless in my case. Lesson learned for you and your children: DO NOT LOOK AT THE ECLIPSE WITHOUT SPECIAL EQUIPMENT/GLASSES PLEASE!
