A beautiful map showcasing how terribly expensive New York is:
Visualization: Voronoi App, Stats: NumBeo
The map is impressive, but it has limitations.
Firstly, comparing a city to countries is strange. For example, this approach makes Japan look inexpensive, even though Tokyo is actually a very expensive city. Singapore is #3 on the list but only because this country is a big city and nothing else. The same about Hong Kong.
Secondly, the quality of services isn't the same in different countries. If you live in Delhi and want services comparable to the average level in New York, you have to rent a property in an elite district in Delhi and hire expensive agencies. Eastern Europe's capitals can actually be cheaper than Delhi from this perspective.
Most cities of Southeast and South Asia are much cheaper than New York, but the quality of air is terrible in some of them, for instance, in Delhi and Hanoi. What's the point of comparing the cost of living between New York and Delhi if the average New Yorker wouldn't want to live in India's capital because of the toxic air and dust?
As for food, if you want to eat as you are used to in New York, you would need to buy expensive products in Asia and Africa, including imported ones, and this may make living much more expensive than it seemed at first glance.
