Really? Soaking in a bath, getting my clothes off, dancing & eating onions all help my bones??
Bone health is one of those things most people don't give a second thought to. Until they fracture one. Or several. Or discover their red blood cells are very low (produced in the bone marrow) during or after illness. Or start to see the effects of poor bone health in their middle & later years through back pain, sciatica & poor posture.
The first look at bone health websites is pretty dreary. Lots of conflicting diet suggestions, some "stop this immediately!" advice (ie drinking soda) and just a whole lot of hard-worky looking stuff like strength training & physio. Depressing, really.
So today, as I sit here with 3 fractures in my elbow after a car accident last week, I want to share some of the simple, fun and EASY strategies I have already successfully used to heal a systemic bone condition these last 15 years. And what I will clearly be doing LOTS of in the coming weeks and months as my bones heal.
SOAKING IN THE BATH
Your body can't USE all that calcium and those essential minerals without lots of magnesium. Studies show magnesium is most easily absorbed & bio-available transdermally. ie through the skin. So toss a handful of magnesium sulfate (epsom salt) in a warm bath & soak for 20 mins. No bath? Go for the foot bath. It works, feels good and you can catch up on steem time or just relax. You will sleep better and your body will be able to use all the extra yummies you give it.
Adding a few sprays of magnesium chloride twice a day really helps a LOT!
Shameless plug - yes my business produces and distributes it. Coming THIS WEEK to Or message my facebook page Pure Thai Naturals
GETTING MY CLOTHES OFF
Yup, it's true. Your body naturally synthesizes the best and most bio-available form of vitamin D through your skin when it is exposed to sunlight (but only in the presence of natural cholesterol, so enjoy lots of healthy coconut oil & butter!). So yes, I often choose to wear shorts or a short skirt so my long legs get some natural light (despite Thai people finding this immodest. What others think of me is their problem). I try to get in the pool. Or garden in a bikini top. You get the picture. 30 mins of natural sunlight everyday. Too easy. Go sleeveless more often, handle the sweat and sit in the sunshine with your coffee. Hit the beach. :)
DANCING
Whether it's a zumba class or a great session at a nightclub, solid weight-bearing impact will stimulate your bones to create new healthy osteoblasts. Gentle walking doesn't cut it, but a rebounder works if you have knee issues. Our absolute fav zumba teacher? The lovey Melinda Blair. You have so much fun you forget what a serious work out she's giving you! The Chiang Mai Wednesday evening Zumba with Melinda is done on the tatami at Spirit Flight, which is GREAT if you are recovering from injury.
AND ONIONS
Both onions and garlic, raw or cooked, contain amazing sulphides that protect the healthy bone tissue you already have! Who doesn't love fried onions? Again, too easy. EVERYTHING I cook pretty much starts with an onion and a handful of garlic. Want to read more about this: https://www.betterbones.com/bone-nutrition/onions-a-fall-favorite-and-bone-superfood/ Does it disrupt meditation practice? A gerzillion Thai monks clearly don't have a problem with that, and neither do I. Shelved in my "western urban health myths" file.
Sooooo.....
It's not all dull & dreary, whether you're sitting in a plaster cast, or nursing a hungry baby or struggling with persistent back issues. Healthy strong bones MATTER, not just for walking or moving, but for optimal red blood production.
Make it fun, challenge the "norms" of calcium supplements as the best option for bone health (pro-tip: they actually cause kidney stones & painful bone spurs) and Be Your Own Doctor.
See you at zumba, on the beach or in the pool. :)
