Teachers are multi tasking individuals. They bear significant responsilibities on education aspects, our jobs are not only, evaluating, motivating, teaching and educating but also must become an example for others, especially for our students. There is a proverb in Indonesia "Teacher piss while standing, students piss while running." Teachers has been embedded as noble individuals where in them, we can learn how to see the world. Now, how good we are, how best they are. It is all because of their teacher and good parents. In addition, teacher must always adopt the justice system of academic where it laid an ethic toward the morality. We know, morality is the way of act. Morality can point out what kind of people they are. What I am going to say is, teaching morality to students based on the teacher figure. Yes, no body is perfect, but we can lead them to achieve the perfect life. Before we discuss further, it is good to know what is morality, as a teacher is also responsible for teaching morality to students.
Morality(from the Latin moralis "manner, character, proper behavior") is the differentiation of intentions, decisions and actions between those that are distinguished as proper and those that are improper. Morality can be a body of standards or principles derived from a code of conduct from a particular philosophy, religion or culture, or it can derive from a standard that a person believes should be universal. Morality may also be specifically synonymous with "goodness" or "rightness".
In my last page I wrote about building character and this still relates to that issue. Morality concern on how student can behave and able to identify which may or may not do or right and wrong. For example, a yougest age student disturb his/her friend, is it included as immorality? It indicates he or she does something improper while we, as teacher, do not show them what is the value of morality, it can not be told as immorality. They have to be firstly acknowledged the value of morality since the school age children are trying to find the true value of life. School is expected to be able to lead their character trait.
As teachers we act naturally to promote the values throughout communication in the classroom. When we give them a chance to express themselves and address their opinion on different topics, we teach them the value of respect, as they need to listen to their friend. We can teach them any moral value in classroom, or out of the classroom. Teachers are their examples, the moral values will go to the right way if the teacher gives them the value of moral in daily basis.
In my perspective, the morality can not be separated from education. It tells many things about how to live a quality life. In order to teach them the value of moral, we need to concern on some stragic approaches of teaching morality to students.
- Teach a given set of values, for example the prevailing values of society, school/organisational rules, or a religious code.
- Encourage the imitation of selected others – within family or school, wider community, historical or fictional heroes/heroines.
- Develop and strengthen the use rational processes and procedures relevant for making moral decisions.
- Provide opportunities for young people and colleagues to clarify and develop their own values.
- Provide opportunities for young people and colleagues to take action based on their own values and to reflect on the outcomes.
Conclusion
Morality may be measured by daily attitude, behavior, and able to identify right and wrong. Teaching moral ethic will make school circumstance away from disgraceful acts. Nevertheless, there’s little doubt that including some kind of character or moral education in addition to strict academics positively influences students. It is our duty to help them find ways to unlock their potential. Students can be taught that they are capable of achieving their dreams and they have to be taught that some values are necessary to live with one another. We can change them to be supreme individuals throughout the implementation of morality value in their life and world be the best place to stay.
