In our culture, educating children using "stick and carrot" way has already successfully proven that it works. The behavior obviously change when parents at home or even teachers at school apply it. Most of children or students want to do something because of expecting something. And they will get rid of doing something bad because they are afraid of being punished. It's still hard to build their intrinsic motivation especially in studying.
