Nearly 7 years ago, when we first started homeschooling, someone mentioned Kahn Academy for learning maths and science. At the time, my daughters were only 8 and 10 and they found the videos a bit tedious to watch, so they struggled to take much in. Fast forward a few years and Kahn Academy has evolved. It has become more interactive, you can earn little completion rewards and have a go at putting what you've learnt into practise. The curriculum has expanded way beyond maths and science.
My daughters have now found a new interest in it. For my eldest it has been an invaluable resource in helping her to comprehend university entry level maths. It's a resource you can go back to time and time again, taking things at your own pace and it is completely free to everyone. The beliefs of its founder, Sal Kahn, are very much in line with our own when it comes to education. In this TED Talk he expands on that more:
Kahn Academy is not for profit and run purely on donations. Their next step is to be able to provide diplomas that will be accepted by institutions worldwide. It won't be easy and I expect there will be opposition from current education institutes. However, as this video shows they seem optimistic that they could make this work. If they can, it will be a game changer:
We believe that knowledge and education should be accessible to all who choose to learn and not just to those who can afford it. Kahn Academy is dedicated to making that happen and we would like to help them to keep doing that.
This will be our first fund raiser for Kahn Academy. So if you also want to help here's how you can:
