A survey was done with the students in our city with regards to the effectiveness of online education during the pandemic times and the results were quite disappointing. Majority of the students mentioned that the online education was not effective for them and that for 2 years their studies were impacted.
Even some of my friends who have been in the teaching field were never satisfied with this mode of education but they did not have much of choice. A friend of mine who is a school teacher for junior classes she would always mention, she never knew what her kids were actually doing. I can totally understand what will be the level of attentiveness online for 6 to 7 years children. We adults have so much concentration issues beyond a certain point of time, then they are kids after all. There were different types of concerns from different levels of classes and majorly all the students had similar complaints.
The one main concern was also about the internet connectivity which the students always faced. Imagine in one home where parents are having online office, children are having online education and other members of the family are engaged on phone then how would the connection be. Especially if there are large families in one home.
I have always been in support of home schooling but not online education. Because for that a certain atmosphere needs to be maintained at home. Also, the other big challenge was that not every member in the home will have a laptop or an iPad, so then mobile phone is the device which is used widely and with that small gadget concentration all the more becomes challenging.
This came all of a sudden so no one was actually prepared to get into this kind of education mode. I believe that even if this way has to be adapted there has to be some kind of preparedness. It has to be a more interactive learning session with upgrade in technology. But whatever it is I still feel that the level of attention in online education is less.
After this Oman is planning to encourage more of e-learning and prepare their teachers on virtual learning modes and develop systems. But then what about practical experience that the students would get like use of a laboratory for science students. Again, the atmosphere in the school is different than home learning, where children meet their friends, they have their play time with them, they are so much engaged in physical activity. During the Covid times many children suffered this part as well, not having enough physical activity.
For Countries where there is a good infrastructure to support online education it is still ok. Imagine a Country like India where there are so many villages and government schools who lack basic facilities in their school premises, how are these students even going to think of online education. These 2 years all of these kids suffered, it was a waste of 2 years for them. They just got promoted to higher standards. A family whose total income is 300$ to 400$ a month, in which they can barely afford two times meal, how is this particular class of people going to cope up with these hi-tech systems.
This situation has left us with many thoughts. It is easy to make quick decisions sitting at the top, but considering the kind of global diversity in each and every way is one solution applicable to all?
