I think maybe professors should be allowed to give their opinion. Sometimes it gets a bit extreme like this professor who got fired, although FOX News maybe instigated it a little.

I think part of the reason why this is such a big issue in the USA especially is because education in the USA, from my experience, is very much treated as a business - but I guess that is because I was lucky enough to go to to private school - St Albans - and private liberal arts university - Harvard.
So my perspective may be biased. I just get annoyed sometimes when teachers and/or professors are forced to be overly politically correct to the point where they can hardly say anything. Maybe that is one of the unintended consequences of a very free market. Or some on the right would argue that it is simply a natural result of a society that has been radically damaged by liberals.
The media, on the other hand, may have gone too far. I think the media in the USA is so biased and are losing their credibility compared to the media in Europe. I cannot seem to find media outlets that are not biased towards one side or the other on pretty much all issues. Usually along the lines of Republican vs. Democrat, Capitalism vs. Socialism, etc. That said, I am pleasantly surprised that Breitbart and Trump for that matter embraces the LGBT community.

The rising populist movement in the USA seems to transcend traditional party lines. Or, perhaps if we go back in history, we will find parties that are not divided along the same lines as those we see in the USA today. And that may then be because political debate, not just in the US but globally, has become dominated by lobbyists and money.
Why? Partly, because political debate has become an industry in itself. Anything that kindles emotion has the ability to make people buy stuff. And when people buy stuff you have an industry.
