Elephants are iconic wild life species for ecotourism; they are the largest land animals (mammal). They are three species of elephants namely the Asian elephants, the Savannah elephants and the forest elephants.
African Savanna Elephant
All elephants are intelligent and their brains are larger than any other land animal (about 5kg). Their social interactions are quite complete and coordination is done through various communication channels. They have an exceptional sense of hearing through their ears, trunk, and feet, and some take a lot of additional sensory input through their trunks. However their eye site is relatively poor. Male Elephants live alone but female elephants live together in families. Young elephants are known as calves.
ELEPHANT IS THE LARGEST LAND ANIMAL IN THE WORLD STILL IN EXISTENCE
This order has only one family in Cameroon, the Elephantidae. It regroups herbivorous animals of very large size whose only representative is the elephant. They are the largest land animals alive today and have long trunks.
African forest elephant
The trunk is an elongated, prehensile elephant’s nose, transformed from the nose and upper that ended up by a mobile tailpiece. An elephant has two big tusks, one on each side of its mouth. The tusks are made of ivory. Elephants (Loxodonta africana) live in Africa and parts of Asia. African elephants are bigger than the Asian elephants and people in many countries of Africa and Asia use elephants as work animals. In Cameroon, we find Savannah Elephant (Loxodonta africana africana) and African Forest Elephant (Loxodontaafricanacyclotis). DF: 1/0+0/0+3/3+3/3.
