A recent article that really caught my eye describes how Colorado's largest utility, Xcel energy has made public a set of statistics on RFP responses that they had received for power projects scheduled to be switched on in 2023... and the insights are fascinating!
The pricing shows that firm power from solar photo-voltaics + #energystorage will be cheaper than power generated in coal power stations! The median bid for solar + storage projects yielded a levelised cost of energy of just 3.6 cents (US$).
This is not a prediction from some partisan industry-promoting hack, it is based on commercial commitments by numerous established engineering companies who would presumably also have built in to the prices a certain amount of buffer to cover for the uncertainty and risk of pricing projects 5 years into the future. So in reality, the cost of energy from solar + storage could be even lower when we get to 2023.
