A while ago, I watched a couple of horror films in one week - "Hellraiser", "The Thing" and two parts of "Halloween". I covered the first movies a while ago, but forgot to do the same for the slasher classic. I am one of the few people who watched the newest part first and then got to know the original. I saw the new part twice - the first time I made a summary of films from a given year, and the second time ago, when I wanted to do a horror movie with my girlfriend. After the first time, I was delighted to give it the first place in my personal ranking of the best films of 2018. After the second, equally pleasant screening, I finally decided to see the original. This one captivated me in such a way that the next day I did not wait until the evening for the right atmosphere, but only watched the continuation until breakfast. The sequel was surprisingly successful for me. I was expecting this part to kick off coupons from an inventive movie, and wanted to watch it for contrast - great movie and a hopeless sequel. For this reason, someday, probably after the new year, I will watch the third, or even the fourth part, but I'll stop there. My list of plan 2 watch movies from the past decades is too long, and I don't have time to watch every cheap sequel. I prefer to spend about 2 hours on a different painting. Oh, one more thing, I saw these productions some time ago, and recently watched a few series, a few movies, which makes my experience of "Halloween" less clear. If I am wrong or have something wrong, I apologize to inquisitive fans.
Although this is a text about old movies, I cannot fail to mention how perfectly and synthetically both parts combine. You get the impression that making such a sequel years later was the original intention of the creators. We have the same atmosphere, the same Michael Myers, both parts portray it very similarly and I did not notice any differences between the creation of both Michael. At most, this newer version perfectly complements the original, e.g. we get a slightly wider context of his first crime, although John Carpenter has already delicately outlined what could have guided the then young Myers when he murdered his sister. I may be wrong, but this blew me away from the start, for both the new and the old movie. Michael mostly killed girls. Sure, I have killed men or boys as well, but he did so when they either had the misfortune of encountering him themselves or they could interrupt his play by warning other people. Did this murderer have some kind of sexual complex that was triggered by his sister? It's hard to say, I don't have enough data to say more about it, although it is probably not a coincidence. If this matter has been raised in the following parts, let me know and I will watch this video.
I liked the film very much for several reasons - mainly for the great atmosphere, directing, the main character and romantic music. Like the sequel from 2018, John Carpenter's painting does not dazzle with blood and brutality (although the recent production has a bit more of it) and focuses on an atmosphere of terror. Michael Myers appears here and there from the beginning, disturbing Laurie and focusing the viewer's attention on himself. At first she is afraid of him, but with time the main character develops a kind of denial syndrome - she pretends that she has not seen anything, that a disturbing looking, large man is just her delusion. It is only in the final act that he realizes that the threat is real and the confrontation is inevitable. Recently I have been watching classic horror films from 30 or 40 years ago and I can see how much the skill of a director means. This is a truism, because it applies to everything, every work and area of life, but I have been paying attention to it fully consciously only for a few years. Previously, I did not pay so much attention to it, and I also lacked knowledge and experience. Coming back to an earlier thought, I appreciate it especially after watching "Evil Dead" or "Hellraiser" which stand out from the first part of "Halloween" or its sequel, which was directed by someone other than John Carpenter. Apart from special effects, which were not present in the movie about the celebration of the Americans, the work of the cult director is better in every respect than the above-mentioned productions. By the way, the heroes of this production watch "The Thing" on TV. However, this version of the film is completely different from what Americans could later see in theaters in 1982. Jamie Lee Curtis deserves special recognition. When I watched "Halloween 2018" for the first time, I was intimidated by its role. A determined Alpha female who has eggs larger than many men. Despite her thirst for revenge and enormous determination, she has not lost her humanity and still has a lot of warmth for her daughter and granddaughter. In the first part, she is at the age of her granddaughter, maybe a few years older. She is an ordinary high school student, neither too conservative nor too progressive. A pretty, honestly good woman who was unhappy with the murderer. In the painting from 1978, she fared just as well. She's not really great acting, and she's less experienced, for obvious reasons, than Jamie Lee Curtis of the latest Halloween movie, but she's more skilled than the female actresses in other horror movies. Probably it is also the merit of the director, who managed it better than her many colleagues. It's not the final girl level from "Terminator" or Sigourney Weaver, but I would definitely put her in the top 10 of the best final girls I remember from the movies. By the way, let me know if you want such a text on the blog, I'll be happy to write it.
As for the second part, this time it will be really short. Not because I didn't like her or because I consider her weak. Even though it was not directed by Carpenter, it holds a surprisingly high level for me. As I said before, I expected it to be just cutting coupons from a popular movie, trying to extort money from fans. I will say more, you can easily take a few ideas out of it and insert it in a slightly changed form into the next two parts. I enjoyed watching this movie and I would love to watch the third part, but only in a while. I heard that it presents a worse level, so I prefer my opinion about the 1st and 2nd film to be fixed and only then I will become familiar with it. As for the sequels, the first one will hit theaters on October 15, 2021. The Two is a direct sequel and starts exactly where one left off. Michael jumps out of the window after being shot by his doctor and continues murdering people. It may not be the best movie, but I enjoyed watching it much nicer than "Evil Dead" or "Hellraiser". I will definitely remember him because of the brilliant scene in the hospital and the murder of a pair of lovers. In my opinion, this is the best scene where Michael kills someone. Perfectly shot, with a great atmosphere, using sound, and quite a nice scenery. One of the best sequels I have seen and I wonder what "Halloween" would look like if this gentleman had created the first part.
Summing up - a brilliant horror movie. If you haven't seen one yet, I recommend catching up.
