I finally watched "Aquaman", which was on my disk for a long time ... And if it weren't for Netflix, which has been reminding me about it for some time, I probably wouldn't have watched it until today xD. It will not be too long review, basically, I will limit myself to a short review. I would even write one if the second half of the film was as interesting as the first. Not that the first one was some original or outstanding show, but it was very nice to watch and I didn't even notice how the hour with the hook was gone. If not for the fact that I am interested in film and comic book universes, I might have overlooked the fact that "Aquaman" is part of the production signed with the DC logo. James Wan put there maybe 2 or 3 short scenes that showed that this is the world of Batman or Superman. It would only be enough for me to check my cell phone for a moment, to write back to someone and skip them.
The plot is schematic, the course of the story, in turn, is a standard super-heroic cinema, but since the Australian director has the appropriate experience and skills, it turned out really well. The scenes are short and specific, we don't get any unnecessary bullshit that slows down or lengthens the action. It's even better with characters and their interactions. James Wan in just a few moments brilliantly drew them. I'm talking about Aquaman's parents (quick presentation of a strong woman, genuine love of two people), the relationship between father and son (the entire segment in the bar is pure gold), or the relationship between the main character and the red-haired Mera. They came out very natural and life-like, in each of the above-mentioned examples, you can also feel the unsuccessful chemistry between the characters. Unfortunately, in the second half of the film, there are much less of these elements, and their place is taken by hackneyed clichés and diagrams for blockbuster cinema. Not that they were made worse, but even if they were presented much better and showier, they would hardly make me remember "Aquaman" for a longer period of time.
When it comes to the effects or the idea of the underwater world and their relations with the inhabitants of the land, I really liked it. The only reservations I could have was slow-motion, which although it turned out a bit better than with the BvS, was equally unnecessary. Maybe I would have had an objection if I had watched this movie in 2022, for example, because technology is aging fast, but now it still looks ok. The world is different because I liked this one as much as the one presented in James Cameron's Avatar. Hydro-cannons, beautiful buildings and machines of ancient and modern Atlantis, the interaction between their inhabitants and underwater animals - all this turned out beautifully. On a small plus, I could also save the soundtrack. Why little? Because although the soundtrack has a few songs that he listened to, so to speak, "offline", it does not definitely stand out above the level typical for super-hero blockbusters. It is a pity that everything turned out like this in the second half, because if it kept the level of the first, "Aquaman" would be one of the best paintings of this genre, and yes ... I will probably forget about him in a few days.
As for Mera - a nice actress and I really liked her in this movie. If I didn't know what type of person she is, I'd probably like to see her in a sequel ... But if I know, I don't want to see her in a sequel - she just doesn't deserve it. However, I subscribe to Mamoy's text from the desert scene - redheads are great.
