The pedicab are non-motorized rickshaw that are rowed by someone (the pedicab driver) to deliver passengers or goods. These vehicles has 2 type; (1) special pedicab to transport passangers, (2) special pedicab to transport goods. Pedicab on the island Sumatera are different those in Java. The pedicab in Sumatera where the passangers beside pedicab drivers, while in Java the passangers seat in front of the pedicab drivers.
Technological development have made pedicab increasingly marginaluzed. Some businessmen of the pedicab turn to motorized pedicab. The vehicle is a long distance, and doesnt need the power to row. Economically, the motorized pedicab is more profitable than pedicab. Usually the passangers prefer to ride a motorized pedicab than pedicab, to quickly get to the destination.
This condition makes pedicab rafting increasingly marginalized. Some enterpreneurs pedicab have to switch business. Pedicab driver must look for another job or be a motorized pedicab driver, and some become unemployed.
The exclusion of pedicab doesnt occur in all cities. The pedicab still exist in several cities on Java island, such as Solo and Joga. Both cities are tourist destination. Although the city of tourism, the cost of pedicab in this city is still cheaper compared to where i live in Aceh.
Some advantages of the pedicab are: the pedicab dont pollute, dont need special skill to drive, accommodate labor, dan the price is not expensive. The presence of pedicab are: the distance isnt far, cannt climb on the high road, and the road is slow so it makes the jam. As a result, Some places in urban areas are banned from pedicab.
CONCLUSION
The pedicab still exist today in the suburb, and some tourist cities in Indonesia. The pedicab are mostly driven by untrained or non-skilled labour. The presence of pedicab provide business opportunities for them. Therefore, the pedicab are still operating today.
