I’m thinking of water I have drunk out of taps over the years, and it’s not good news.
As a child we moved in and out of a certain town where the water was supposed to be good. At least 30 years later I saw a news story about that place and lawsuits going on about the toxic heavy metals in the water supply for the last century.
There was some kind of processing plant there leaching metal waste into the water table and people were dying in horrible ways. So I am glad we did not live there too long or too often.
In my last year of high school I attended a boarding school alongside the Erie River in New York State for about 4 months. The water we drank from the tap was directly from the river and untreated. It came out fizzy and had particulate matter in it.
As students in the dorm rooms, we used to keep cups by the sink, fill them and wait about 12 hours for the fizzing to stop and the junk to settle to the bottom. We drank the morning water at night and the night water in the morning.
During the day we were drinking from water fountains and worrying about what was in it. But are you going to die from thirst, or die from bad water? As teenagers, we just drank.
Later living in California as an adult, my water from the tap carried Colorado River water which also had particulate matter in it. Brown goo settled in your dish drainer and this mud had to be washed out weekly. At least by this time, I knew better than to drink the water and started buying bottled instead.
