I think we will be getting a lot of grisly posts from my fellow fictional freewriters today, but this prompt takes me to a rational and practical place.
I’m thinking of how there is common wisdom about having the right tools for the job so that you can do well at your tasks. If your knife is not sharp, your cutting will not go well. I completely agree with this and do not like to even try using a dull knife with my arthritic hands.
I cut fresh ginger many times a week and when it is hard to make thin ginger slices, I know it is time to sharpen my knife.
You can find all kinds of ways and tools to sharpen your knives. I have had several expensive gadgets over the years. But now my life is one of making do, and here is how I keep my two cheap and broken-tipped knives sharp.
Yes, I use the underside of a coffee cup or plate or anything with an unglazed ceramic edge like that. I normally make 8-10 passes on each side and repeat that a couple of times.
Coffee cup knife sharpening is not perfect, but it works for free and I have not had any problems with this method.
