The weekdays were quite busy for me in Rwanda which opened up the weekends for adventure. I was invited to visit many of my new friend’s homes that were tucked away in the villages surrounding the city in which I stayed. It was never a quick or easy journey to get to these villages but it always served as a good work out and an excellent way to view the country side. 1 fast and crowded 15 minute bus ride plus another 45 minutes on foot over rocky and steep terrain concluded my first hike up towards the mud hut homes. From there on, I began to use my free days to walk with many of my local friends to visit their families, listen to them sing songs together, eat sweet potatoes and beans, photograph their neighbors and friends, and tour their modest homes. I enjoyed being in the villages, the hills were decorated in the colors of trees and flowers and vegetable gardens, the streets were dusty, and the gathering children were plentiful. It was unlike anything I have ever experienced and I feel lucky to have been so wholeheartedly welcomed into this wonderful world.
