This is my entry for vehicle photography by #thaiphotocontest33.
This photo was taken two weeks ago while I was taking a walk in Nongkhai early in the morning. The train arrived half an hour early so I had to wait for my favourite food stall to cook her sour fish soup. I would normally get two portions to take home for lunch. During the ten minutes’ walk, I found this car with very outstanding Naga design. Most people along the Mae Nam Khong River believe in and respect the legendary creature of magical water snakes or Nagas who could appear in human forms. They usually live in caves under the river and they could travel along secret underground tunnels to appear in lakes and far away down the river.
Most of the time, these Nagas are on retreats to practice Dhamma as they all want to be reincarnated as humans in their next lives. According to Buddhist lores, a Naga appeared as a young man in front of the Lord Buddha asking for an ordination as a monk so that he could find Enlightenment. But the Lord Buddha could see that he was not a real human, so he was not ordained. The faith in Buddhism among these Naga tribes was very strong as they sometimes disguised as humans to come to listen to the Lord Buddha’s teachings. That’s why we see statues of Buddha sitting in meditation with Naga’s hood! The Naga didn’t want the Lord Buddha to become wet and flooded by heavy rain while in meditation. He coiled his body as a seat for the Buddha while expanding his seven heads into an umbrella to shelter Lord Buddha from rain. Nowadays there are still two tribes of Nagas living along the river. If you are very lucky you might be allowed to see one of them by chance.
รูปภาพนี้เราถ่ายไว้เมื่อสองสัปดาห์ที่แล้ว รถไฟมาถึงสถานีเร็วกว่าเดิม เราต้องคอยให้แม่ค้าจัดตั้งร้านและทำอาหารให้เรียบร้อยก่อน เราจะแวะซื้อต้มยำปลาแบบอีสานไปกินที่บ้านเสมอ เรามีเวลาไปเดินเล่นริมโขงประมาณยี่สิบนาที ก็เดินไปเจอรถคันนี้ที่มีการวาดรูปพญานาคสีสวยสดใสที่ตัวถังรถยนต์ ทำให้รู้ว่าคนอีสานมีความเชื่อและ ความเคารพในเรื่องพญานาคอย่างเหนียวแน่น ในพุทธศาสนาก็มีเรื่องบันทึกเกี่ยวกับ พญานาคแปลงตัวเป็นคนเพื่อมาขอบวชเป็นพระ เพื่อจะได้ปฎิบัติธรรมให้ถึงความหยุดพ้น แต่พระพุทธเจ้าไม่บวชให้เพราะรูว่าเขาเป็นพญานาค ความมุ่งมั่นในศาสนาพุทธของเหล่าพญานาคนั้น ก็ปรากฎให้เห็นในพระพุทธรูปนาคปรก ที่แสดงให้เห็นถึงพญานาคที่มาขดร่างเป็นที่นั้งให้พระพุทธเจ้าไม่จมนํ้าขณะที่ฝนตกหนัก และแผ่เศียรทั้งเจ็ดเป็นที่บังฝนให้ขณะที่ท่านนั่งสมาธิ ทุกวันนี้ยังคงมีพญานาคสองเผ่าที่อาศัยอยู่ในถํ้าใต้แม่น้ำโขง ถ้าเราโชคดีก็คงจะได้พบเห็นพญานาคตามริมนํ้าสักวันหนึ่ง
