The role of a counsellor in our society today can not be over emphasized. They have helped to provide solutions to some of the problems facing human in the area of career choice, building a perfect home, mentally disorder, emotionally disturbed, psychological problems to mention few.
who is a counsellor?
A counsellor is someone who has undergo a formal training and has acquired the rightful certificate to practice as a counsellor. It is someone who is trying to help someone to provide solution to an area of conflict which have not be resolved. Also a counsellor can be regarded as someone who involves in an interaction between a client or group of clients with the aim of bringing out a positive change in the behaviour of the client(s).
With all this brief definition of a counsellor, there are some expected behavior or attributes expected from a good counsellor in order to justify the ethics of his profession.
Attributes of a counsellor
Emphaty
A good counsellor is expected to show emphaty to his client(s) and not symphaty. He must be able to put himself in the position of the client(s) so that he will be able to full understand what his client(s) is going through at that moment. He must be highly emotional.
Secretive
This is another attribute that a good counsellor must possess. He must be able to keep secret meaning some level of confidentiality is required from him. No matter the situation may be, he must not expose whatever information his clients has provided him with.
Patience
As a good counsellor, he must be able to devote his time to his clients without rushing. He must be able to accept any form of embarrassment because his clients may be so emotional at times and continue to take things up with him,so he must be tolerance.
Communicate well
He good counsellor must be able to use simple and clear words to avoid misinterpretation and misunderstanding. He should be able to use different communication skills both verbal and non verbal.
Maturity
Here the counsellor is expected to show some level of maturity and most not be distablize with whatever information he has received. No matter the case may be, he must not allow the information to put a strain on his own memory and personal life.
Unconditional love
He should love everyone unconditionally without being bias, he must not discriminate among his clients base on tribe or gender. He must accept his clients the way they are without any form of hatred.
Conclusion
The attbutes of a good counsellor is not limited to the above attributes, he must also be knowledgeable, all these will make him to discharge his duty well as his profession demands.
