The crater in the picture is a crater of fire that occurs due to human error while taking natural gas.
In 1971 Soviet scientists tried to find oil resources in the Derweze region. When scientists start drilling the ground, suddenly the soil layer collapses into a crater and emits gas. For fear of adverse impact, scientists finally decided to burn the gas in hopes of being lost. However, their estimates miss and the gas continues to burn up to this day.
