DAMASCUS - Syrian government regime forces have recaptured half of East Ghouta territory from rebels in a fierce war that began on February 18.Until now, the number of civilians killed in the region reached about 850 people.
The Syrian regime's onslaught-supported by its allies Russia and Iran-in East Ghouta has sparked criticism from a number of parties, mainly from the United States (US). The UN Security Council has approved a ceasefire resolution for the region, but Syria and Russia insist the resolution does not apply to extremist groups.
The Jaish al-Islam rebel group that has been controlling parts of East Ghouta, is not considered the Syrian regime as moderate rebel, but extremist group.
Data on the death toll from civilians who reached about 850 people was announced the Observatory for Human Rights of Syria based in the UK.
On Wednesday, government troops of President Bashar al-Assad captured Beit Sawa, Al-Ashaari, and nearby farming areas. According to the Observatory, by seizing some of the region from rebels, Assad's stronghold has controlled half of the once-controlled East Ghouta territory.
