Young women under the age of 21 are twice as likely to become unwanted pregnant than women over 21 years of age - especially because they forget to take the short-term preventive agents like birth control pills, p-rings or p-patches daily.
It states a study in the journal New England Journal of Medicine, writes dagensmedicin.dk
The study included more than 7,500 women aged 14-45 who did not want to become pregnant within the next year but had a high risk of unwanted pregnancy.
75 percent of women in the study chose the contraceptives used as they were free in the trial, but are otherwise more expensive than the short-term contraceptives.
334 women became pregnant during the 36 months of study. Of these, 21 of the women used implants, while 133 of the women used birth control pills, p-rings or p-plasters.
In view of the result, researchers wonder that it is no longer recommended to use implanted pills, p-rings or p-plasters.
Up against every other pregnancy is undesirable, and half of them are due to fatal contraception. Unwanted pregnancy can adversely affect women's health and education and the health of the newborn child.
