Its a Christmas miracle! There has been the release of Three new Etheremons, comprising the start of Gen 1. These new mons are Mintol, Omnom, and Kyari - the best thing - they're free! (Well except for the gas price of the transaction fee to interact with the Smart Contract).
These little guys will be able to transform into other forms later on, but they will require their GEN 0 ancestors in order to do so, and the GEN 0 mons are going to be scarce. This should encourage the trading mechanics which are due to launch very soon.
As soon as people overcome the fear of using things like metamask and having funny ethereum crypto-currency money in their computer, stuff like this is going to take off.
Etheremon, Crypto Kitties, and Crypto Puppies (currently in development) are just the first taste of what it is that can be done with blockchain games. These are early days, like the really old browser days where you'd build up a fleet of soldiers / spaceships / centurions / insert thing here, and fight an expansionary battle in the same vein of style as so many modern mobile games.

As the dev's blog states there will be several more released in the next 7 days, and further to the ability to transform, there will be a relationship in battle power between having tenured, battle hardened ancestors, and the new Mons.
