- Valletta will share the title with Leeuwarden, a city in the Netherlands.
- The European Capitals of culture initiative aims to highlight the diversity of European culture and to increase the citizen sense of belonging to a common cultural area.
- Almost 1/4th of Malta population, nearly 1M people turned out to celebrate the event.
