The letter to the Romans is perhaps the epistle that best expresses the theological thought of the apostle Paul. In it, the apostle Paul presented himself as a profound expert on the doctrine of the Kingdom of God and its law, with the intention of training the fledgling Church of Rome in the Christian faith.
And in the letter written by the apostle, there is a passage referring to the limitation of the law of Moses with respect to the grace of God. And about this, the apostle Paul agreed with the teachings of the apostle James when in his letter he explained that the higher spiritual gifts such as wisdom, which are so necessary for an adult Christian, cannot be obtained through the works of the law but by firmly and faithfully asking God for these gifts. However, there is something that cannot be overlooked. The spiritual gifts are fundamentally a gift from God to men, gifts that men, and this is true, can gradually come closer through listening to and living the word of wisdom.
And to clarify the relationship of the law of Moses with the gift of faith, the apostle Paul wrote: "So the promise is received by faith. It is given as a free gift. And we are all certain to receive it, whether or not we live according to the law of Moses" Romans 4:16. And then Paul, to reinforce his thinking, wrote about overcoming the law through the sacrifice of Christ: "What the Law could not do, because human nature was weak, God did. He condemned sin in human nature by sending his own Son, who came with a nature like our sinful nature, to do away with sin" Romans 8:3.
Christian spirituality is ultimately an invitation to a new freedom, the freedom of the children of Israel according to the spirit, and this freedom is directly related to spiritual gifts, and not with the accomplishment of imperatives, prohibitions, and orders. Because with Christ, there is a new law that frees men from the slavery of the flesh and leads them to the freedom of the spirit. Growing in grace, as Paul taught, is growing in that faith which, based on the word of wisdom, bears fruit of life.
