The other day, I was reading 's post called Nothing Last Forever. It mentioned a common Japanese tradition of having a picnic around the time of the cherry blossoms. The blossoms are out for 14 days every year and they have a picnic to appreciate the beauty in life. This helps them remember that nothing lasts forever.
Cherry Blossoms really are an incredible metaphor when we think of our lives, nothing last forever. Everyday we should remember to enjoy the small things in life. Enjoy that special time with your loved ones, take in the beauty of all that is around you. Why? Because you never know when that beauty will end.
This made me think of whether I'm enjoying time daily with my kids. I mean, they're only under our roof for a certain number of years, and we need to appreciate each day! So I decided to be like the Japanese yesterday and enjoy a picnic outside with my kids (and the neighbor kids showed up too).
My kids are still pretty young, but I know these years will fly by. Just like this first year in Panama, it seemed so long as we lived through it, but looking back, it was pretty short! One day, I'll appreciate the times I took to slow down and appreciate my kids...and the neighborhood dog that wouldn't leave us alone!
While we were out there, we checked out the tree we were under. It really is a unique tree. It seems at one time, there was a cable wire or something going over it or around it that it has now swallowed. This is also two trees. One that has totally wrapped itself around the other. There are also a lot of air plants living in the tree.
The rock where we sat was also interesting to look at. It is covered with lichen. It is one of the only shady spots in the green space in the middle of our neighborhood, and it was a great place for a picnic. It was a simple picnic of chips, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, a cookie and some apple slices. But it was fun!
When was the last time you loaded up the family and had a picnic? My kids have always loved getting to eat outside on the ground...and I enjoy getting to picnic with them, even when it requires just a little extra work on my end. It is days like this I'll miss when they are older, so I'm happy to take the time now...remembering that their childhood doesn't last forever.
What is something you can do to cherish memories with your loved ones today?
Make a post about it and tag it with #nothinglastsforever. Enjoy life now. Be in the moment. Be grateful. Enjoy your friends and family this weekend!
