Based on the Famous Book "The Road to Serfdom"
How do you teach the principles recorded by the author F.A. Hayek, who warned us about the trend towards tyranny. Well, Mr. Hayek, it appears we are just about there. He warned us "of the danger of tyranny that inevitably results from government control of economic decision-making through government control of economic decision-making through central planning."
Yup, so here we are!
How Do We Explain This to Children?
The Tuttle Twin books are excellent at taking complicated subjects and simplifying them for children. This book will introduce children to new words like "central planning" and "collectivism" and "eminent domain".
The story has the Tuttle Twins going to their favorite beach-side boardwalk La Playa Lane for a family vacation. The Tuttle discover that the road they normally take has been clogged with traffic, making it difficult to get there. When they arrive at La Playa Lane, they find many of their favorite stores and restaurants are gone and the beach is mostly empty. They decide to interview the shop owners to find out what is going on.
The Tuttle Twins learn that a new road was built to a shopping center/beach called "Surfdom" (hence the "road to Surfdom"). This caused the old road to be closed and discouraged visitors from coming and encouraging businesses to move. The Twins decide to investigate further, with the help of their Youtube famous investigative reporter uncle.
They interview people beside the new road (central planning) and discovered it had terrible effects on them. A dairy farm that has been in business for decades had to close up, a man was pressured to sell his farm (eminent domain) that has been in his family for generations and a little girl was hurt by a car zooming by her house. These are all unintended consequences resulting from central planning.
The twins drive down the smooth new traffic-free road and visit "Surfdom". They are greeted with crowds, flashy lights, broad pathways, brand-new beach accommodations and many thriving stores and restaurants. Sounds nice, but the Tuttle Twins know the real price that people were paying for this new contrived development and decide they would rather go back to their favorite La Playa Lane.
Their uncle compiled the interview and explained to the world the "unintended consequences" of "central planning" that caused great sorrow for the people living near and around the new road, built by the authority of "eminent domain".
I Encourage Everyone To Get These Books Into the Hands of the Next Generation
These are principles that are on the brink of extinction. For every ONE child learning about the dangers of Government overreach, there are at least THREE more sitting at the feet of a leftist school teacher, learning about the principles of communism.
The lessons learned from these books are valuable and the children eat them up like candy. I didn't prompt this reading session, I found my oldest (8) sitting on the couch, book open, siblings gathered around.
