Well it seems like autumn has arrived quite abruptly. After some fantastic weather in September, the evenings are well and truly setting in accompanied with the wet and windy weather. That means more time in side and fewer opportunities to make excuses about finding time to do things.
There are a few activities I've decided to spend more time doing this winter, the first is to visit my family tree.
I've spent a lot of time on this previously and have even sought professional help which has got me back to the late 1500's on my father's side. I've been advised that I should be able to gather more information and get further back but will need to visit the records office which I think is now based at Ely. Unfortunately the current situation with Covid means that people are strongly advised not to visit so that will have to go on the back burner for a while.
I have however got a copy of my grandad's military records which look to contain quite a lot of detail. I also need to learn to read old scribbles as to be honest I've not got a clue what is written. I imagine things might be warming up again by the time I get it all worked out!
My grandad died back in 1998 and like many of his generation never spoke in detail about his time in the war. He did share snippets though and left me lots of photographs. Hopefully it'll be dead interesting to slowly piece things together.
