One of the recommendations of the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women’s Report was that “Birth Alerts” stop.
A birth alert is where a hospital employee contacts social services for an investigation into illegal activities.
More often then not it’s called on native people for being native, at which point the kid is taken away.
In the case linked to above there were any legal reason for calling social services on the parents, so they went with the term neglect.
Neglect has a legal definition when it comes to children, and there’s no physical way for a parent to neglect their child within 90 minutes of being born at the hospital.
If a child is being neglected at the hospital... shouldn’t it be the parents calling investigators on the hospital?
We won’t know what’s going to happen until the 25th though.
It really should be making more headlines.
