Is it just me who find the choice of accessories of Future and his beautiful black daughter at the BET Awards this weekend disturbing? Or is it that I may see way too much into this?
I personally find his choice of accessories lacking taste and culture knowledge. Let me explain: about a year ago during a fashion show, a model walked in on the runaway in Sao Paolo wearing a long dress sporting the muzzled blue eyed face of a very popular and beautiful slave named Escrava Anastásia. The world revolted against this and since then we have not heard anything until Future and his daughter walked the BET Award carpet.
Who is Escrava Anastásia; her early history is not very well known and whether she was born in Africa and later on brought to Brazil or Just born in Brazil, remains a mystery. But what is a known fact is that Anastásia was a black slave with blue eyes, incredible beauty and who possessed healing powers. She was mistreated by her masters but remained a gentle person only showing kindness to everybody around her. I have heard many different stories about why she ended up being forced to wear a muzzle and why her hair was shaved. Some say that she had help other slaves escape but the one I like the most is the one about her master falling so much in love with her, that his wife got jealous and while the master was away, the wife ordered for her hair to be cut off and a muzzle to be put around her mouth. This so no men would find her attractive again. So now she felt like what they saw her an animal, a slave. Don’t we love a story of jealousy and revenge? However, this one is horrible.
So do you now understand my confusion when I saw Future walking on the red carpet? the worst was that he brought his daughter with him: wearing the same mask. Are we not trying to educate our children in knowing where they come from and be proud of roots? Therefore, the representation of the muzzle is not something we want to force in our children heads and especially not our daughters. I do not understand what he was trying to show and which fashion trend he was trying to put out but unlike the Kanye west torn up clothes being sold at thousands of dollars; Future and his mouth accessory has me completely lost.
