Maximus Decimus Meridius

Salve! If you’ve seen the movie Gladiator it’s hard not to love this character. The great thing is, and as it turns out, he’s not a real historical figure but a made up character.
Why’s that a good thing? Because it allows him to be as good or as bad as the writer/director wants him to be. Without worrying too much about messing up the facts. But at the same creating a believable character and a seemingly realistic portrayal of the time period.
Considering this Maximus was probably based on several different historical figures — who actually existed amongst or around the same time as, the characters in the movie that depicted real people from history. (like Marcus Aurelius and Commodus)
One of the reasons that make Maximus my favorite movie character is, first and foremost, the fact that he’s a bad-ass. In the early scenes he’s commanding an army and chopping through barbarians — like a Brooklyn hipster chops a salad (maybe just a bit more cool looking).
We then get exposed to and continuously reminded of his compassion, logic, reason, and righteousness. Like when he turns down the chance to be emperor of Rome.
All of these aspects are reinforced throughout the film — whether it be his compassion to his fellow gladiators, his love for family or his bad-assery in the colosseum.
Unfortunately most of these values are essentially what get him into the dreadful situation(s) we see him in towards the later parts of the film.
Along with all this I’d have to add that he’s a bit of a stubborn donkey. And had he been a bit more shrewd, willing to bend the rules and play the game — he might have had a different fate than that scripted to him in the film.
Conclusion: y’all should watch this movie (either again or for the first time) and experience first hand how great of a character Maximus really is.
