For the last weeks I've been trying to find time to make my #featheredfriday post, but for a number of reasons I didn't make it... until now! So thank you for keeping this cool tag alive!
And although the photos aren't great, this species is special to me:
And for several reasons:
It was the first time EVER I saw one of these
They hardly stand still, so actually getting a photo is a bonus
I got to see babies as well!
This is a species that only exists on Madeira island, so I felt even more lucky for being able to spot it! It is very similar to the firecrest we have on mainland, but apart from the geographic difference, there are a few characteristics that allows the identification, such as the shorter white stripe above the eye.
They can be identified by their calling, and with a little patience they can be seen, jumping quickly from twing to twing. It was by mere luck, that as I was trying to see them, something still in the middle of the trees caught my eye.
And as I looked closer, this was probably the reason for all the chirping: a couple of juveniles, waiting to be fed!
After a great walk in the nature, this was the best way to finish the trail! Happy birding everyone!
