“That was Katie you saw me with, you have always known her, she is my classmate and I really don’t understand why you would think I date anyone I talk with.” David calmly respond.
This was all on the way, as they were heading towards David’s lodge outside the school hostel. Not too much of a distance.
David unlocked the door, opened it for her to walk in, then just closed it behind him. As he was moving into the room from the sitting room, Gloria held him back by the hand,
“Just forget it all this, please. I just don’t want to lose my friend,” Gloria calmly replied.
“Doing this would make you lose me. You are my friend, okay? That won’t change, even when I later get married.” David touched her shoulder and gave her a warm smile while looking into her eyeballs.
The pain was evident in Gloria’s eyes the moment David mentioned marriage. David felt it too.
Still holding her shoulder, David gave her a gentle but firm squeeze while Gloria allowed herself into David’s arm and broad shoulder. She could hear his heartbeats, and David held her closer on her waist with his left hand, while running his fingers on her hair with the right.
After few minutes, they sat down and she carefully placed her head on his broad shoulder, and he couldn’t take his hand off her slick black long hair. While they were seated, she lifted her head, looked him straight in the eyes, and tilted to kiss him, he instantly moved to meet her halfway, but they were brought back to reality and consciousness with a knock at the door. You could feel the anger in David’s voice when he asked who was at the door.
“It’s me David” came out the voice. The voice was tender, calm and familiar. David knew that was Stacey’s voice, so he asked her to open the door. Stacey walked in with Luke, and the four friends exchanged pleasantries while they sat down.
David turned the T.V. on but he couldn't take his eyes off Gloria as she was laughing at the comedy they were all watching (He still wouldn't force Gloria to do what she doesn't want to do. He still keeps faint hope that she might accept him but it has to come from her, not him).
Luke was engrossed in the comedy too, and Stacey kept admiring how amazing Luke was as he was laughing incessantly. She caught David a few times as he was staring at Gloria while giving a warm wry smile.
It was getting late, and they all have to leave. Stacey and Luke stood up and Gloria followed too. Gloria was pulled back unknowingly to others while they walked through the door. David touched her hair again, Gloria smiled.
“I have to go now, it is getting really late,” Gloria said.
“I know, I just want to wish you a proper good night,” he winked.
“First time in a long while you will do that,” she teased.
“Better late than never, right?” David winked.
They both moved closer to give each other a “proper” good night when Luke barged in again.
“Sorry guys, I forgot my key,” Luke said.
“It’s all good. Let me join Luke and Stacey once and for all," Gloria said.
She left with him, and David could imagine his heart trying to pop out of his chest. He slammed the door and sank into his chair, sad and angry!
