Humans and Casuarids team up aboard an exploration ship. Powers that Be help anyone that attacked, because that was one ship that was every bit as dangerous to attackers as one filled with only humans. The humans, for the record, loved their time aboard, it was fun!

Everyone gets sick of the status quo, sometimes. The facts of life as they stand can get either dull or irritating. In the case of the Vorax raids in Edge Territories, it was definitely the latter.
Humans alone were enough to strongly discourage most Vorax from their usual tricks. The ace up the sleeve in this particular patch of the Edge, were the Casuarid.
They only looked like fragile avian Havenworlders.
Fact: flightless birds don't need to be light or delicate. They can have bones that could serve as a bludgeon, and many other weapons besides.
Fact: when you can't fly away from trouble, there aren't many other options than fight.
Fact: Casuarid foot talons can split steel.
The invading Vorax were not prepared for the combined Human/Casuarid fleet engaging in boarding manoeuvres against them. They were all set to invade, raid, and escapade. They were not prepared for the sight of squishy apes and large birds charging into their deployment dock.
They were definitely not prepared to have their livesuits split open by bird claws.
It was almost insulting.
Those Vorax who were there for the glories of battle soon learned about the gories of battle as well. They learned that anyone could die or be injured in a raid. Including themselves.
It was a short, sharp shock for the survivors.
The parting message from the combined Human/Casuarid forces was, "Rack off and don't come back! We're tired of your faces."
Translated into the Vorax language, it was quite a threat.
