Andres Bonifacio and the Katipunan
Sons of the Nation
The exlusivity of this movement which is only for those who grow in the archipelago has a huge reason for Bonifacio and the Katipunan. This will be the primary basis for them to claim being the "sons of the nation." This claim were also revealed by historians. Guerrero mentioned that while the educator also treated themselves as "hijos del pais" (sons of the country), the Katipuneros also looking to themselves as the sons of the nation.
According to Guerrero, the Katipuneros don't want the country to be name "Philippines" instead they use a term that truly provided them the identity whatever their ethnilinguistic classification and origin. That's why they called themselves as "sons of the nation" because they came and grow in the archipelago.
The "sons of the nation" are the people who grow in the country and their awareness, experiences, culture are rooted from the early Filipinos. In this point, the Insulares and the Chinese are not "sons of the nation" because they have different culture, experience and history. This was also the reason why the educated reformist does not also belong and called as the "sons of the nation" because their awareness does not rooted from the culture, experience, and history of those who grow in the country.
It undeniable that their awareness is from the outside and as a son of the "mother-Spain" - proving that their patronange is for the Spain. It is clear that they wanted the Philippines to be a province of Spain; who entered and built a colony in the country. There's no doubt that they are not the "sons of the nation" because they are not part of the group who wanted to build the "son of the nation."
As time passed, these elite also wanted to build their own socialization. However, this desire is not to replace colonial structure but to replace only those colonial leaders. Therefore, the awareness of the educated reformist, the elite and the "sons of the nation" are different. There's no doubt that experience, culture and history are refers to the people who grow in the country. In his composition titled "Ang Dapat Mabatid ng mga Tagalog" (What Tagalog Should Know), Bonifacio expressed the honorable history of the Tagalog or the people who grow in the country.
In establishing the "overall nation" or "Katagalugan," only its exclusive member, therefore who has the rights to be called "sons of the nation." They are the "sons of the nation" because they grow and originated in the country. This claim is very important as a "son of the nation" because it shows that not only their origin in experience, culture and history of the early Filipinos but it also emphasized the strong foundation in establishing their own socio-political-culture.
As the "sons of the nation," they have all the rights to claim and build the nation/overall nation/Katagalugan. This is clear to their declaration that only them, the true owner of the nation and holds all the power in it.
Since it was not written in any reason that anyone can hold and own a land that does not belong to him, we who truely owns and grow in this land were oppressed and seized were the true owner, don't collect debt because of those deeds, but to ask to return to us the whole power towards these islands aside from the truth that we don't need to become workers and be lead by the people from other lands (AGMM 1892-1897, Caja 5677, leg.1.37.20.
The "sons of the nation" will be the foundation of this overall because the foundation of this were base on the power of the nation (AGMM 1892-1897, Caja 5677, leg.1.36.2-3). This power came from all the "sons of the nation" and according to the welfare of all (AGMM 1892-1897, Caja 5677, leg.1.36.3)
