While almost all of today's Hollywood superhero films look alike, creators of 2012 Chronicle went in the opposite direction and made one of the most atypical films in that genre. Story about three teenagers who, after being exposed to strange alien phenomena, develop telekinetic abilities, is told through found footage technique. Based on the script by Max Landis and directed by Josh Trank, Chronicle features some ingenious and sometimes impressive ways to make even the most fantastic events realistic, including protagonists' use of telekinesis in order to record themselves in a way that resembles conventional film. Made with very low budget of 15 million US$, Chronicle is with 83 minutes of running time almost half shorter than typical Hollywood superhero films. Ingenious little film succumbs to cliches only at the very ending, when the mix teenage traumas and godlike abilities of a character played by Dane DeHaan create apocalyptic finale quite familiar to those who watched Sissy Spacek in Carrie.
