Following their zeitgeist-creating The Matrix in 1999, Wachowskys not only failed to build on such epochal success, but also created one of the greatest box office disasters in history of modern Hollywood. Jupiter Ascending, enormously expensive 2015 science fiction film, features Mila Kunis as Jupiter Jones, young cleaning lady and daughter of poor Russian immigrants in America whose attempt to sell her egg cells starts interplantery intrigue. It turns out that Jupiter is descended from powerful human-like aliens and that she is an actual heir to Earth. Those claims business brings enmity of powerful alien business leader Balem Abraxas (played by Eddie Redmayne), but she is protected by skillful alien soldier Caine Waise (played by Channing Tatum). Wachowskys tried to mix good old-fashioned soap opera with some contemporary social issues like the plight of immigrants, inequality and exploitation but the noble message was lost in dreadful script, complicated plot, too much emphasis on CGI in action scenes and, finally, some bad acting, especially in case of Redmayne as pathetic villain.
