Muppet Christmas Carol (1992)
Directed by Brian Henson. Starring Michael Caine Steven Mackintosh and Raymond Coulthard. Performed by Frank Oz, Dave Goelz, Steve Whitmire, Jerry Nelson, David Rudman, and Don Austen.
In Victorian London a miserly moneylender named Ebenezer Scrooge is visited on Christmas Eve by a number of spirits, who intend to show him the error of his ways, through visions of his past, present and future.
Muppet Christmas Carol is the first major Muppet Project following the death of creator Jim Henson in 1990, his son Brian Henson’s directorial debut, as well as seeing the role of Kermit being handed down to Steve Whitmire.
Whitmire has said he was incredibly nervous about taking over such an iconic creation, and the day before he was to record Kermit’s musical numbers he had a dream where he was visited and reassured by Jim Henson himself.
Both actor David Warner and comedian George Carlin were considered for the role of Scrooge before it was offered to Caine. Caine agreed on the condition “I'm going to play this movie like I’m working with the Royal Shakespeare Company. I will never wink, I will never do anything Muppety. I am going to play Scrooge as if it is an utterly dramatic role and there are no puppets around me"
