Last night I saw “Dances with Wolves” , I hadn’t seen it in maybe 20 years… and I must say I loved watching it again after all this time.
I consider it one of the most important movies in my life, I used to love it with all my heart when I was a child… and… I was bait afraid I would not like has much now. “Maybe it’s just a bit too “politically correct” and I’ll gain a less appreciative felling for it.
However that was not the case. I’m happy that the movie holds such a nice place in my existence.
This is a super classic, so I won’t go much into details.
I’ll just have a few words in case you haven’t seen the movie. Specially for the younger audience.
“Dances with Wolves” is an 3 hours long feature film. Directed by Kevin Costner, it’s a western that takes place during the civil war.
The protagonist, played by Costner too, is a army soldier, that is assigned to an abandoned fort.
He ends up meeting the Sioux tribe near by. That’s more or less the resume of the story.
When the film was over, one of the questions going thought my mind was, why don’t they make movies like this anymore?
I don’t want to be a grumpy old man, insisting nothing is worth a thing anymore… but I must say…” Where are these kind of films?”
Granted, people attention span has been decreasing more and more, so 3 hours might seem a bit heavy for some of the audience these days.
However the movie is as long as the movie needs to be. That story takes that time to be told well and that’s that. It’s a wonderful story told with no shortcuts and has it should. That alone makes me enjoy it.
It’s a story about tolerance, different cultures, virtues and weaknesses…. this with out a 21 century extremist, simplistic point of view… “All the poor Indians are so good and all of the white man are the devil” … no, it depicts the culture clash, between indians and cowboys, in a rather objective way… somewhat realistically and accurate.
Recently we’ve had a movie with a similar narrative called “Avatar” while I do appreciate Avatar, I must say as far has story goes I do prefer this one.
(And Avatar was a malfunction in the system… only Cameron could have made it. It’s one of the few original content big movies form the last years)
I really enjoyed my time watching the film, personally it gave me some nostalgia about my childhood, but I believe even without it, I would have loved it.
Let me suggest that you watch it again… even if you saw it long time ago and did not like it, give it another try. Or in case you haven’t seen it yet, give it a try.
I will call it Kevin Costner's Master Piece.
