Tim Burton, each time many of us hear that name the first thing that comes to mind are films such as "The Nightmare Before Christmas" or the 1988 Batman film "Batman Returns" or even the 2007 film "Sweney Todd" and I could spend all day giving so many examples. We all know this great director mainly by his most popular films, however as any director in the world of Cinema has good, bad, horrible films and then there's the films that "could've been masterpieces" but never hit theaters. Today I would like to show you a list of 6 movies that the director Tim Burton almost made but were never finished due to running out of budget or due to a last minute change of mind.
1. Jurassic Park
Tim Burton nearly directer Jurassic Park back in the early 90's, however Universal Studios secured the rights and Steven Spielberg directed instead.
We can only wonder what Tim Burton's vision would have look like... but it would have likely featured Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder.
2. Batman Forever (better known as Batman III)
Burton's Michelle Pfeiffer-led Catwoman never hit theaters due to studio meddling, Batman Returns screenwriter Daniel Waters had even written a script which saw and amnesiac Catwoman fighting secretly evil superheroes. Sadly Batman Forever made more money in the box-office than Batman Returns. Which led to the dumpster fire that was Batman & Robin.
3. Addams Family Stop-Motion animation film
In 2010 Universal acquired the rights to The Addams Family with Burton attached to write and produce a stop-motion animation film. Sadly the film was canned during pre-production.
4. Superman Lives
Superman Lives is the mother of all cancelled films, it was loosely based on the Death of Superman comic book arc, it would have featured Brainiac as the villain, as well as the destruction of Krypton but it was a fraught with issues, including multiple script rewrites. After wasting millions of dollars, it was cancelled.
5. Live-Action Adaptation of Pinocchio
In 2012, Warner Bros, were looking to make a live-action adaptation of Pinocchio, Burton was set to direct, with Robert Downey Jr. playing Gepetto. Burton would pass to make "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children"
6. 1998 Adaptation of Goosebumps
In 1998, Burton was attached to the big screen adaptation of Goosebumps, However, the film lacked a script... Author R.L Stine stated that "we couldn't decide what book or monster to do" The film eventually came out in 2015 and starred Jack Black. Which of these cancelled Burton movies would you have liked to see?
