The Basketball Diaries is one of the most moving and thought provoking films I have ever seen. The true story of Jim Carroll, growing up in NYC in the 1960's. Leonardo Di Caprio plays Jim Carroll, a young high school boy with a talent for basketball. The film tells how Jim falls down a slippery slope into a nasty heroin addiction, prostituting himself to keep up with his habit, after seeing his best friend suffer from leukaemia, fending off sexual advances from a gym teacher.
I won't tell you any more as I don't want to ruin the film, but things only get worse before they can get better.
The Basketball Diaries is based on a series of books written by Jim Carroll, and directed by Scott Kalvert. Spot Mark Wahlberg as one of Jim's friends.
Interesting Fact: Leo famously didn't want to work with Mark Walhberg on the Bastketball Diaries, as back then, he was known as Marky Mark, of Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch fame.
