"The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" was written by Suzanne Collins and was published in 2020. It follows the story of young Coriolanus Snow long before he became President Snow. Not exactly the story that everyone wanted from the "Hunger Games" universe. It sold pretty well though, considering that is came out in the middle of the pandemic and a lot of book stores were either closed or had problems with shipments. So I guess that that was the sign that Lionsgate was waiting for to bring back the "Hunger Games" franchise to the big screen.
Now, only two years after the book came out we get our first look at the movie. The movie itself The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is set to come out on November 17, 2023. Tom Blyth will play Coriolanus Snow, he is not a well-known actor and looks like he got his hair bleached for the role. Not a great look. Rachel Zegler ( West Side Story) is Lucy Gray Baird, our other leading actress. I assume that Zegler was cast in the role because her role requires a lot of singing. She is a district 12 tribute, but she is not a fighter, she comes from a family of entertainers. But yeah, when I read the books all I imagined was a different version of Katniss Everdeen. Viola Davis has just been cast as the main baddie of the movie, so she brings in the name power. But still, this is not exciting view of the "Hunger Games" world or exciting casting choices.
We had a teaser of a teaser trailer for the movie
And now we also have a first picture of our too leading characters together:
They look dreamy and in love, but this is not an impressive first look. This doesn't scream this looks amazing and I have to watch this movie. Which is what it should do. It just looks nice. Not an insult, but not a high commendation either.
I read the book and it was just alright in my opinion. But I also felt that it was an unnecessary cash grab. There are a lot of them out there and sometimes they are enjoyable, but this book wasn't good enough to make up for the fact that it was unnecessary. Less than a year after I read it I hardly remember what was in it.
Am I excited for this movie? No. Will I watch it? Probably at some point. What about you? Are you excited for this movie?
