I remember watching this movie with my then girlfriend, somewhere in 2015. I can't recall who picked the movie, whether it was her or me, but - looking back at her taste in films - she tended to choose romantic comedies - it probably was me.
Although, she might have chosen it because she liked Jake Gyllenhaal. Talking about Jake, I am not necessarily a fan of this guy but I have to admit that he's one of the best younger (Hollywood) actors of the last 10 to 15 years or so.
I discovered him through the film Donnie Darko (2001) that I watched with 4 study friends at the Rotterdam film festival, back in the days. I remember all 5 of us us being quite amazed by that film and the acting skills of the young and - back then - still unknown Jake Gyllenhaal. Later, that film became hyped, received a sort of cult status and I started to like it less.
A decade and a half later, Jake has proven to be more than a one hit wonder. He's one of the biggest actors of his generation.
Nightcrawler is definitely one of his best performances so far and I like it for many different reasons. It has a (film) noirish vibe to it and I love its theme: how journalists do everything they can, in order to bring the most exciting news.
Haven't seen it yet? Give it a watch. Seen it already? Perhaps give it another watch. I definitely feel like doing so now...
I leave you here with the trailer to make up your mind:
