This film was originally released as NC-17 due to the graphic nature of it. It features an all-star cast and is atypical of especially Hugh Jackman to be involved in. Despite the fact that later it was considered to be a "top ten film" of 2013, most people I speak to have never seen it.
I'm kind of on the fence about whether or not a person really needs to remedy that situation if they haven't seen it.
So basically this movie is a drama/thriller and has two of the world's biggest stars in it with Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal and for most people that is reason enough to give it a go.
The story, without giving it away is about a father's search for his kidnapped daughter and how the law doesn't do enough to progress finding her and therefore he must take matters into his own hands and become a bit of a demon himself.
It is worth noting that pretty much everyone's performance in this film is amazing, in particular Paul Dano who you might recognize as the religious snake from "There Will be Blood." I always have a lot of time for Terrance Howard as well and it seems as though he doesn't take on many roles.
To be honest with you i think the only person who seems a bit "wooden" in this film is actually Jake Gyllenhaal, but to be fair I have never really held him in high regard as an actor, but I will admit that I am biased in this thinking.
The movie made a bunch of cash and was nominated for "best cinematography" which is a category that to be honest, I've never really understood what it actually entails.
For the most part, this film is interesting and worth seeing. That being said, some of the scenes are tough to watch because of the gruesome nature of what is going on. For me, the most surprising part about this film was that it was made at all in the first place, and that Wolverine was chosen for the lead role. It is interesting to note that Christian Bale and Leonardo DiCaprio were involved in this film at one point and for me anyway, I am very happy that Leo ended up NOT being in it.
