Sea horse is a type of fish that lives in the sea of the genus Hippocampus and family Syngnathidae. Animals of varying sizes between 16 mm (for species of Hippocampus denise) to 35 cm can be found in tropical and secondary waters around the world. Sea horses are the only species that males can conceive. The dorsal fin on the seahorse lies at the bottom while the pectoral fin lies on the head, near the gills. Some species of sea horses are partially transparent, so they are not easily visible.
Sea horse population is threatened due to overfishing. Sea horses are used in traditional Chinese herbology and as many as 20 million sea horses have been caught annually for this purpose. Sea horse export imports are regulated in CITES since May 15, 2004.
