The State of Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) cited a 35-year-old Marden Ribeiro, on a North Shore Shark Adventures boat on Thursday for chumming the water off Haleiwa to attract sharks. The officers said that at around 10:30 a.m., officers saw the man holding a bucket and throwing fish into the ocean. Several sharks then appeared. Activities relating to feeding sharks in state waters are prohibited with very few exceptions. Chumming the water is a petty misdemeanor punishable by fines and jail time.
It is illegal to feed sharks in state waters, which extend three miles from shore. North Shore Shark Adventures was also busted in 2010. Joe Pavsek, owner of North Shore Shark Adventures, said in 2010, "We do not chum before tours. We have to go out to set the shark cage prior to the tours. This is to be in compliance with our Certificate of Inspection with the United States Coast Guard. Just another lie."
I am getting so fed up by these people who trying to make money off the environment who lie, cheat, and harass.
I have had this happen to me a number of times when I am fishing, or diving, in open waters and then a Tour Boat comes by and harass me to get out of "their" spot.
I have been fishing off the land when a Catamaran Snorkeling Tour pulls up right where I am whipping and they tell me I am putting their clients in jeopardy even when I was there first.
These people make me sick because they are trying to show people the beauty of our home, but they are motivated by greed. I don't want people like that showing our land to the world. People who don't embrace the spirit of the land, and just want to make money from the land, disgust me.
